Having unsafe sex is the major cause for developing STD’s. If you have developed STD due to any reason, then you may get depressed how to tell your partner or your loved one that you are suffering with STD. This problem is not just yours but to all of those who are suffering with STD. This article provides a solution for your mind wrecking problem.

It is highly essential to inform your partner or any other person with whom you are involved in sex relationship. It is your responsibility to not make the other person a victim of those serious infections just because of your mistake.

In order to inform others about the STD you are suffering, you should first learn to view it as a simple infection. Do not be shy to talk about it or discuss about it with others. Discussing with others helps you to know the solutions that would be helpful in the sex relationship.

Some people hesitate to tell their sex partner about the STD and calmly use condoms to avoid the spread of infection. But, if you tell your partner about STD after having sex, you may have to face the worst. This is just because she or he may not wish to have a sex relationship with a person having STD. Just keep your fingers crossed and inform your partner about STD hoping for the best to happen.

Before you inform your partner about the disease, have a full knowledge about the disease. Certain diseases such as gonorrhea can be cleared by using of antibiotics. But, diseases such as HIV are life-long and cannot be cured. By having this information in-hand, you will be able to answer the questions put by your partner. If you are suffering with HIV due to some unknown mistakes such as blood transfusion, do not forget to mention it to your partner. This way you can prevent the relationship from breaking.

It is a good idea to practice on how to discuss with your partner. Anticipate the questions that your partner might ask. Try to come up with a convincing answer. Never lose your temper at any moment of time. It is quite common for your partner to lose his or her temper upon hearing the fact that you are suffering with STD. It is the time, during which you have to be very calm and hear what they have to say. Start discussing with your partner after he or she calms down.

Sometimes, it is possible that you might not be aware of the fact that you are suffering with STD. In such cases, it is your responsibility to talk to your partner and encourage him or her to get tested for STD.

If you are not good at following any of the above given techniques, take the help of groups that are very good at giving a sign to your partner that you are a victim of STD.

Lastly, you can find a great number of tips over the internet regarding the same. Be confident and communicate with your partner rather than hiding the fact.

One unit of alcohol is roughly the equivalent of half a beer or most of a small glass of wine. This is the main measurement used for alcohol consumption, and usefully makes it easy to calculate roughly how much alcohol is in your blood at any time. As a general rule, one unit of alcohol takes one hour to leave the blood and two units take two hours etc. However this number will vary dependent on several factors.

For example your weight can affect how long alcohol takes to leave your system, with the heavier individual generally sobering up more quickly as units of alcohol make up a smaller percentage of their body mass. Meanwhile though, thin people are likely to have a faster metabolism which would contribute to the alcohol leaving the system quicker. Meanwhile your gender too can affect the amount of time alcohol stays in the blood with males generally being faster to get rid of it. Age too can play a role on your sobriety with those between the ages of 20-30 being the quickest to get the alcohol out of their blood stream.

Interestingly, even stress and psychological factors can play a role in how long your blood retains alcohol. This is just one of the surprising examples of the mind and body link in action. The amount of food you have eaten can also help your body to dispel alcohol as it increases your metabolism and allows other nutrients to enter your blood stream and line your stomach (which is where the alcohol passes into your blood). Similarly water can also help you to sober up more quickly – thinning and diluting the alcohol in your blood while at the same time forcing your body to flush itself out more and expel toxins through urine. Be aware that medication can also play a role in your sobriety and in some cases cause unwanted reactions. Finally, if you have liver problems (which ironically are often caused by alcohol) then this can cause your body to take longer to get rid of the alcohol in the blood.

These facts can all be useful in helping yourself to become more sober more quickly, and to understand your own and other people’s limits better. Eating, drinking water or getting fresh air can all help you to sober up more quickly, and you can assess your limit and that of others by their age, gender and weight. A useful tip for if you want to sober up without being a party-pooper, is that if you drink very slowly (under half a pint an hour) and drink lots of water, then you can actually sober up slowly *while* drinking.

A smoking addiction occurs when an individual becomes dependent on cigarettes and cannot cease using them without experiencing severe and unpleasant physical and emotional reactions. Such a condition is dangerous with many health risks associated with smoking (around a third of smokers die as a result of their smoking and on average smokers die around ten years earlier than non smokers), and is also antisocial and expensive. Before you can kick the habit however you need to understand it, and before you can understand a smoking addiction you need to realise that it’s a complex interplay of various factors – which is a large part of what makes the addiction so difficult to overcome with only 2.5% of smokers successfully quitting each year.

One of the main reasons smoking is so addictive, and the one we shall examine here, is that it contains nicotine (which is also what makes it a physical addiction as well as a psychological one). Nicotine is a drug that is absorbed into the blood stream through the lungs when the smoke is inhaled (as well as slightly through the lining of the mouth or buccal mucosa and more so when tobacco is chewed and the nose). This then effects the electrical activity of the brain, aiding the transmissions across synapses of neurotransmitters which the brain responds to in the same way as though it was the original hormone (acetylcholine) which results in a calming effect as well as various other changes to the hormonal systems in the body (it may additionally increase attention and recall and its effectiveness as a nootropic is being examined). Importantly however it’s the effects it has on the ‘pleasure centres’ of the brain (the mesolimbic dopamine system among others) which can partially explain its addictive properties. This is then exacerbated as smokers develop a tolerance to nicotine which enables them to take higher and higher doses before noticing the effects to the same degree. This can then also cause withdrawal symptoms, caused partly by the fact that the brain stops producing as much acetylcholine naturally by way of compensation and has changed to the point where it actually requires more rather than less. The rapid effects of nicotine also mean that it usually doesn’t take long before users develop a physical smoking addiction. For those who have an addiction to nicotine, nicotine patches or nicotine gum can be useful to lessen dependence on cigarettes.

While the inclusion of nicotine explains a large part of the physical, chemical smoking addiction, there are many other factors at play. Smoking for one is a social behaviour, and it can . It can also become a habit that you reach for for comfort much like nail biting or playing with your hair (which is why many people find it helpful to use a plastic cigarette), in these ways it’s possible to become psychologically addicted to too. A successful strategy to quit smoking will take all these factors into account.

We live in a fast-paced world, where stress is an integral part of our lives. People from walks of life have to encounter stress. Job hurdles, relationship pressure, financial crunch are amongst the dominant factors responsible for inviting stress in our lives.

Prolonged stress can have unimaginable effects on your mental and physical state of health, which is why it’s imperative to fight or curb stress before it builds up. During moments of stress, we are engulfed with negative thoughts and our actions might seem unacceptable to people around us. Not to undermine the fact that we tend to lose our peace of mind and sleep when we are mentally disturbed.

Fortunately, there are many ways to overcome stress. Let’s uncover some easy and natural means to eradicate stress from our lives.

Remember just like our body, our mind also requires rest. We need to provide our mind the time to relax and rejuvenate. If you overlook this factor then you will not be able to see a way out of your stressful situation.

There are many activities which can blow away the stress from your life. For instance, watching a movie is a great way to relax your mind. If you don’t keep yourself busy, then you are bound to think about the events that is causing stress in your life. Likewise, if you indulge in activities which are not very pleasant then this will do no good to your current state of health, which is why watching a movie is a good choice to make as it will discard all the negative thoughts and pressure surmounting around you. If you can’t drag yourself to the cinema hall, then rent some good DVD’s and watch some of your favorite movies within the comfort of your house. It’s advisable to choose comedy movies so that you can regain the cheerful smile on your face. After all, that is the need of the hour.

Walking is another good stress relieving tool. Choose a good spot for a leisure stroll such as a park or a garden. Try to wander in different directions so that your mind is engaged in admiring the beauty of the nature, or enveloped by the thought of seeing something new. It’s always a good idea to allow fresh inflow of air into the body by taking some deep breaths in the open air. Allow your eyes to wander at places where individuals are engaged in fun filled activities.

Meditation is also a great way to eliminate stress. The best part about meditation is that you do not require much time, efforts or equipment for practice. One simply needs to choose a quiet place and then calm down the mind by taking deep breath.

If you are looking for a more happening means to eliminate stress, then put on your dancing shoes and start dancing to your favorite tune. Not only will this eradicate stress, it will also contribute to your health.

Following these natural means is a great way to overcome stress from your lives. Practice these measures as you don’t deserve to lead a stressful life!

If you have diabetes (formally ‘diabetes mellitus’) then your doctor should have helped you to devise and eating plan that will lessen symptoms of diabetes and work with rather than against the medication you are taking. However this diet plan will not likely cover every type of food, and understanding why a certain diet works and how diabetes effects your body can help you to make informed decisions of your own outside of the diet. Furthermore it can help you to feel more involved in the procedure and more invested once you know the whys behind what you are doing.

Diabetes is a condition caused by an excess of glucose in your blood. This occurs due to other problems with the body’s insulin – insulin being the hormone that instructs the body to turn glucose into energy. In a type one diabetic the insulin simply is not being produced enough due to damage to the pancreas (usually caused by the individual’s own immune system) while in a type two it is due to the body becoming insensitive to the insulin it does produce. This then results in extra glucose which can then cause various other problems to the body – damaging the nerves and causing other complications. Meanwhile the lack of insulin itself can also cause difficulties leaving the patient unable to convert their glucose into energy. Doctors will treat this condition with anti-diabetic drugs including insulin to replace the missing insulin in the blood and thereby use the spare glucose.

A good diet for diabetics then should avoid certain foods. Obviously these are anything that contain more glucose as these will simply counter the positive effects of the insulin. This includes all carbs, particularly ‘simple’ carbs involving sugar such as cakes, chocolate and sweets. Some carbs will need to be consumed to maintain basic energy levels but these should be kept to a minimum and should be complex in form such as bread or wheat.

Other foods that a diabetic patient should be careful with are those that mimic the effects of insulin such as garlic, cucumber, raw green vegetables and soybean. These foods obviously can be great for someone with diabetes as they will further lower the body’s glucose. The only danger however is that if the patient is already taking insulin, they could then accidentally overdose by driving out all the spare glucose in their body. This is particularly dangerous as some nerve damage caused by diabetes (diabetic neuropathy) can cause damage to the autonomous nervous system (autonomous neuropathy) which can in turn lead to ‘hypoglycaemia unawareness’ which is a condition characterised by an inability to tell when the body is low on blood sugar. If you suffer from this and eat too many anti-glucose foods along with your insulin you may then cause yourself to become hypoclycaemic without even noticing it. This is particularly the case with the herb gymnema which many diabetic sufferers take as a dietary supplement to lower glucose levels. If you are going to begin any course aimed at lowering blood sugar you should first consult with your doctor.

Similarly you should avoid foods that will raise your cholesterol as diabetics are susceptible to high cholesterol. This means avoiding salts and saturated fats which can build up to cause ‘arterial plaque’ and interrupt blood flow. For this reason you should avoid such foods as egg yolks, fatty meats, cheese and full-fat dairy products.

While avoiding all these foods you can also combat some of the effects of diabetes by eating a diet that is high in minerals and vitamins and includes lots of fibre to continually flush the system improving cholesterol and clearing out excess glucose.

Diabetes is a condition that is caused by an abundance of glucose in the blood which comes as a result of insufficient insulin (insulin being a hormone that causes the cells in the liver, muscle and fat tissue to take up glucose in order to convert into ATP to be used as energy). In type one diabetes this is due to a failure in the pancreas to produce the hormone (after the pancreas is damaged by the body’s own immune system), while in type two it is caused by the body’s failure to respond to the insulin. This excessive glucose then leads to further complications such as excessive urination and thirst, nerve damage (which presents itself as tingling in the extremities), vision problems, tiredness and more.

Unfortunately there is no ‘cure’ for diabetes currently and despite claims to the contrary being found online no human can ‘recover’ from it as such (it is possible for cats to make a recovery interestingly though). As such any method, medication or product – natural or otherwise – that claims to provide a ‘cure’ is some kind of scam. What both doctors and natural treatments can do however is to help with diabetes management and to minimise complications.

And by ‘natural’ this mostly means lifestyle changes and diet alterations that can help the body to deal with the extra glucose while not exacerbating matters. Of course the first and most obvious thing to bear in mind here is not to worsen the excess of glucose by consuming more. This means limiting intake of sugar as well as carbs in general and particularly simple carbs. That means no cakes, no chocolates, minimal bread, no sweets… and while this might seem a little bland as a diet there are fortunately a lot of replacement options out there for diabetics such as diabetic cakes and diabetic chocolate – which provide much of the taste without the overload of glucose.

Similarly consuming extra fibre can help the body to flush its system of the unwanted glucose and to aid in digestion in the case of type 2 diabetes by clearing the digestive tract. Fibrous foods include nuts, wheat, whole grains, citrus fruits and others.

Other foods you can add to your diet will mimic the effects of insulin. Among these are flaxseed oil, buckwheat, cucumbers, garlic, green beans, avocados, soybeans, tofu, sprouts, raw green vegetables and oatmeal. Garlic in particular is also a great source of fibre and can prevent other complications too such as cholesterol. Other general healthy additions to your diet can help too. Be careful when consuming these however, as if you cause your blood sugar to drop and you are already taking medication you may inadvertently overdose in insulin thereby causing hypoglycaemia. Consult your doctor on any such diet changes before you begin.

Omega 3 fish oils are also thought to have positive benefits though there is not enough support surrounding this yet. This could work however by improving glucose tolerance, thereby making the body better able to cope with the extra glucose and helping to protect against such things as nerve damage. It has also been thought to increase triglycerides and to improve cholesterol levels – though other case studies suggest that they can in fact cause detrimental effects. As such more research needs to be done into the area, but eating a diet higher in fish (not taken specific supplements) could help. Some diabetics have also found that they benefit from a vegetarian diet, and studies have shown this to cause positive changes in the body as soon as three days after it is started. It is thought that this could again work by improving glucose tolerance. At the same time reducing the intake of protein will place less stress on the kidneys which can minimise the damage caused to them by diabetes.

Some specific supplements are also being examined for their helpful effects on diabetes. These include ginseng which has been supported by some studies as a means to improve blood sugar control through the use of glycosylated haemoglobin which monitors glucose in the body. Chromium meanwhile is a trace mineral found to help the cells in the body to respond to insulin. Some studies have also demonstrated that there are already low levels of chromium in the blood so as a supplement you would simply be replacing this deficiency. Other studies have shown that chromium can significantly improve insulin sensitivity. Magnesium meanwhile is another mineral which is implicated in 300 of the body’s chemical reactions, many of which could be vital to helping blood glucose control particularly in type 2 diabetes. Cinnamon too has been shown to improve glucose sensitivity while zinc can help with its production and storage, while gymnema can decrease blood sugar (but should not be taken without consulting a doctor as it may lower it too far when taken in conjunction with medication). Vanadium is said to reduce blood sugar in type 2 diabetes. As you can see then there are many minerals and herbs that can help control levels of insulin and therefore glucose. Simply taking a multivitamin and mineral tablet regularly could have some beneficial effects, while supplementing specifically with vanadium, zinc, chromium and magnesium could provide a four-pronged attack on your glucose levels.

As well as making changes to the diet, there are also several lifestyle changes you can that will help lessen the symptoms and complications of diabetes. For example excess fat decreases the number of insulin receptors in the body and makes the body less sensitive to insulin. This creates a vicious circle of sorts too as when you are overweight, the body actually needs more not less insulin. This is another good reason to eat less sugary snacks and fewer carbs. It also means you should exercise which has other great impacts on the body – causing those with type 1 diabetes to require less insulin, making an individual less likely to develop type 2 diabetes (making it a great preventative measure if diabetes should run in your family), reducing body fat and improving insulin sensitivity. As insulin is an ‘anabolic’ hormone, exercising will cause it to be released further in order to maintain the body during its post workout stage. Other supplements used by bodybuilders might also be able to trigger a more anabolic state, as does sleeping or a hot shower. One thing to note however is that as exercise reduces blood sugar levels, your usual doses of insulin might lead to an over dose if taken soon after. Speak to a doctor or health expert before beginning any training regime.

You may find however that you find it difficult to summon the energy to exercise. This is likely caused by the body being unable to use the glucose in your system thereby being unable to burn it for energy. There are some ways you can improve your energy however that do not revolve around glucose and these revolve around the body’s two other systems of getting energy – the glycogen-lactic acid system and the phosphogen system. Here the body uses ATP and glycogen stores that it already has, thereby bypassing the need for glucose (the body will use up these stores before moving on to the aerobic system where it needs glucose). Fortunately you can increase the length of time this takes through the supplement ‘creatine’ which is used in sports and works by allowing the body to ‘recycle’ used ATP. Another method of increasing energy through supplementation that might work is to consume resveratrol, which improves the function of the mitochondria – the mitochondria being responsible for ATP production.

Similarly other general healthy lifestyle changes can improve diabetes. For example it is important to drink less alcohol as this will worsen glucose tolerance and increase the likelihood of eye and nerve damage. Smokers meanwhile are at greater risk of kidney damage, heart disease and other issues connected to diabetes. Smokers are also more likely to develop diabetes.

When diagnosed with diabetes your physician should talk you through the lifestyle and diet changes you can make to help your situation and these will be tailored to your particular condition and biology. Ensure that you stick to these strictly as well as any medication. Meanwhile understand that any touted ‘cures’ for diabetes are only going to lead to disappointment and potentially be dangerous if you use them at the expense of your recommended treatment. Do not be taken in by the promises of homeopathic products which have no basis in science, but use common sense to generally improve your health and your diet and supplement your efforts with minerals.

Summer’s fun has faded and now it’s time to crank up the heat, grab a cozy throw, wrap your cold hands around a cup of hot tea and perhaps curl up with a good book.

Well, that would be nice in a parallel universe. The thing is, you have to jump up early, make sure the family has a healthy breakfast, and get everyone out the door in one piece. And… you’re faced with frigid weather conditions.

The last thing you need to worry about is the oh-so-dreadful sniffles, which then turn into a sore throat, accompanied by a nasty cough and fever, which inevitably represents lost wages you were counting on. Let’s not even talk about the growing pile of dirty laundry you can‘t bring yourself to do.

So, how do you stay sniffle-free? What can you do to increase your chances of breezing through the winter healthy and strong, immune to the sea of sickness surrounding you?

I’ve decided to share what works for my family. Following are seven ways to keep your body’s defenses on the up and up. These tips will help keep you on your feet performing all the duties beckoning to you.

1. Take probiotics. Available at your local health food store, this supplement boosts your immune system’s defenses. Swallow a capsule or two each morning before you head out the door. It’s a simple and quick way to help fight the flu by preventing it.

2. Add a teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar to a glass of water, 1-3 times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria that can make you sick. It also has been known to give one an overall feeling of increased energy and well-being.

3. Eat garlic. A natural antibiotic, this often-avoided food has medicinal value that will not only keep the vampires away, but the doctor, too. The body doesn’t become immune to garlic as it would a prescription antibiotic, therefore you can reap the positive benefits continually.

4. Take a good multivitamin. Provide your body with all the ammunition you can to combat the germs it will come into contact with. In our polluted environment, we need all the help we can get.

5. Make healthy food choices. Fuel your body with balanced nutrition so it will be strong and function properly. The more nutrition you consume, the stronger your immune system will be. Treat your body well and it will do the same for you.

6. Wash your hands! Germs are on the rampage these days and cleanliness is vital to your health. You never know what illness lurks on doorknobs or shopping carts. Keep a big bottle of hand sanitizer in your car as well as a small one in your purse or pocket.

7. Rest. Get to sleep early and stay well rested. Enough sleep cannot only enhance your immune system, but give you that extra ‘pep in your step’ you need to make it through the day.

These seven suggestions should carry you through winter’s cold and flu season sniffle-free.

Parkinson disease is one example of a progressive illness. This means that as time passes, the symptoms get worse and are mostly irreversible. What this also means is that the early symptoms of Parkinson disease are usually very subtle but grow more pronounced as time passes. As a result, it can be difficult to define whether a person is suffering from the early stages of Parkinson disease or not.

In a lot of cases the individual themselves doesn’t actually notice that anything is wrong, but a close relative or loved one does. This could be that they slur their words a little, or are slower going up and down the stairs than usual. They might have become more clumsy lately or their hands have a small tremor. These things are usually attributed to old age, but there are ways to identify if it is indicative of the early symptoms of Parkinson disease too.

How the individual feels in themselves is incredibly important as Parkinson disease has other effects other than simply shaking or having slowed motor skills. The early symptoms of Parkinson disease may include feeling under the weather, more lethargic than usual and having myalgia: a general unwell feeling. They are also likely to notice a change in their motor skills and perhaps speech. It may be harder to do simple tasks, or their handwriting might change and become harder to control. Those who are artists or who have delicate or fiddly hobbies or careers usually notice increased difficulty. One of the other most common symptoms is feeling more rigid than usual. Partners or family might notice that a person’s facial expressions become less animated and instead of looking happy they look like their smile is somewhat forced. It’s not, of course, but the muscles are not receiving adequate signals to produce a full smile. Symptoms like this are often harder on the carer or relative that they are on the sufferer which is why counseling can be just as important to them as it is to the individual affected.

The single most important thing for someone who thinks they may have the early symptoms of Parkinson disease to do is seek medical help. Early treatment of this disease is the most effective and so you should seek a diagnosis as soon as possible. Even if your doctor or a specialist doesn’t think it is Parkinson’s they may be able to help diagnose another illness that requires rapid treatment, or keep an eye on your symptoms closely to see that they don’t progress.

The early symptoms of Parkinson disease are quite simple toned down symptoms that are experienced later on in the disease. While you may be reluctant to contact your doctor if you have what you think are insignificant symptoms, it’s incredibly important to act fast and be vigilant with this illness. Even a matter of weeks could make the different between a person being able to write a letter in one year’s time or 5 year’s time.

A nerve is what causes us to be able to send and receive signals around our body. This means that it is responsible for both controlling our limbs and extremities as well as for giving us feedback in the form of tactile information and pain. A trapped nerve is, like it sounds, a case where the nerve gets trapped and is thereby ‘stuck’ under pressure. This might be a result of a bone or joint that is jutting out and trapping the nerve, or a muscle, or swelling. This then has one or more noticeable effects, either causing serious pain, lack of sensation, ‘tingling’ or a lack of movement – or several of these things combined.

The most common form of trapped nerve is the well known sciatica. Here the sciatic nerve becomes trapped by a slipped disk, or just from becoming entangled in the spine. This is the largest nerve in the body (hence the predominance of the problem) and is responsible for sensation and movement in various diffuse areas of the body. Thus trapping this nerve can have multiple undesirable effects, most of which are felt in the lower back where the nerve resides, down the legs and into the feet and buttocks. This will usually involve pain exacerbated by use, and/or a tingling sensation potentially with a lack of movement and other potential complications.

Another common condition revolving around a trapped nerve is carpal tunnel syndrome which occurs when the median nerve in the wrist gets compressed and crushed resulting in pain and loss of sensation and/or movement in the fingers. However a trapped nerve can occur anywhere on the body.

How you go about fixing a trapped nerve will depend on various factors including the severity, cause and location of the problem. If your trapped nerve is the result of swelling or injury then it may go away with time. Some trapped nerves become lodged after sudden awkward movements and these too can work their way out. If your trapped nerve is to do with swelling then of course using anti-inflammatory drugs and potentially an ice pack with elevation can help return space and freedom to that area.

Alternatively you might need a little help in removing the trapped nerve and in this case you may be referred to a physiotherapist who might be able to ease the pain by manipulating the joints and muscles. A normal massage in some cases can be enough to solve the problem.

In more chronic conditions such as carpal tunnel or sciatica it will be more difficult to solve the problem. Here you may find that pain gets worse with time and be taught some exercises to temporarily alleviate pain. Depending on the exact reason for the trapped nerve, surgery might be one option to release it manually. Alternatively a brace can help to take some of the pressure off. An epidural finally is a steroid injection delivered straight into the sciatic nerve which will bring more long term pain relief but is an invasive and sometimes dangerous procedure.

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD or STV) which results in the infrequent outbreak of painful legions and boils around the genital area along with other symptoms. This is a variation of the cold sore virus (the cold sore virus is ‘oral herpes’ or HSV-1, genital herpes is HSV-2) and like the cold sore virus it cannot be cured, only controlled and managed.

This of course is bad news for those infected herpes who obviously could benefit from a cure to prevent the soreness and itchiness as well as to protect others, reinvigorate their sex-lives and avoid embarrassment. For this reason there is much research being conducted into potential cures or at least more effective treatments for herpes and sufferers will be pleased to hear that some of these are currently looking very promising.

One area of research is looking into the effectiveness of lysine as a treatment for herpes. Lysine is an essential amino acid, meaning that it is important to the healthy function of our bodies but cannot be produced by the body itself. This means it must be ingested as a protein in order to be used and from here it has many beneficial effects. Of these benefits, those relevant to herpes include aiding the production of elastin and collagen which improve the health of the skin thereby combating some skin conditions. The anti-herpes affects are more likely to work however by tipping the balance of lysine and arginine in the favour of lysine. It has been noted in some studies that an excess of arginine can exacerbate herpes symptoms and this concurs with other studies. In one report it was found that in a sample of 45 patients lysine could suppress the symptoms of herpes (Griffith et al 1978) though there are few studies on the effect. Another way in which lysine is thought to work is by producing antibodies that can help to repair tissue.

Lysine is available from many health stores to be taken as a dietary supplement and can also be found in foods including milk, soy, lentils, oranges and others. Lysine has been shown to be more effective in treating oral herpes.

Another area of research is ‘antiviral therapy’ which is aimed at developing drugs capable of distinguishing those harbouring the virus from those that do not. Such drugs will then destroy the virus inside infected cells without damaging those that are healthy or causing mutation. This has been achieved for various other viral infections using various indicators and specific chemical reactions.

Another area is immunotherapy. Here the treatment is aimed at helping the body itself, specifically the immune system, to combat a foreign infection by stimulating the correct white blood cells.

Other studies are looking not into curing herpes but in improving management and lessening outbreaks. Interferon for example may be able to help suppress herpes by preventing the replication of the infected cells. However studies need to confirm these ideas (interferon is a known and accepted treatment for genital warts which is a similar condition in many ways).

Similarly, research is also looking into the developing vaccines which work using either samples of the HSV virus or DNA. These are then entered into the body in small doses in order to act as a target for the immune system and to ‘prepare it’ for the real infection once it enters the blood. It is thought that a vaccine will be available within 3-5 years, while one vaccine that is more generally anti-viral but may help herpes, ‘Isoniplex’, is already available. This vaccine is currently undergoing further research.

A downside of the vaccine approach however is that obviously this has no use for someone already infected with herpes. However it can make their sex lives a little easier too by enabling long term sexual partners to get the vaccine which would mean they could have intercourse without fear of contracting the condition.

Another preventative measure being examined is the microbicides. These work by killing off contagious microbes and come in the form of gels and creams that can be applied to the vagina or penis. While these again are not aimed curing herpes, by applying them to the genitals of either the infected party or their partner it would be possible to prevent the spread of the disease. Thus a herpes-infected patient could have sex without discussing their condition and everyone else could opt to be on the safe side.

In other words, if you are currently suffering from herpes then help may well be on the way in the next few years. It may even be that something that already exists and is available can greatly help you with your condition but just simply needs to be discovered. Do your own research too then and read up on the mechanisms of the disease and you can decide on what looks promising.
